The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Your American Cancer Society is in your corner around the clock to help you stay well and get well, to find cures, and to fight back.

How We Help You Stay Well

Nearly half of all cancer deaths could be avoided if we did what we know works ─ live healthier lifestyles, quit smoking, and get our recommended cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society is here to help you take steps every day to stay well. We have the resources, information, and support you need to stay motivated to eat right and get active, quit smoking or help a loved one kick the habit, and understand what cancer screenings you need.

How We Help You Get Well

The American Cancer Society is here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help guide you through every step of a cancer experience. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, are currently going through treatment, or are caring for a loved one with cancer, we are here with information, day-to-day help, and emotional support every step of the way. From free lodging and transportation to help making decisions about your care, we offer programs, services, and resources in our Find Support and Treatment section to help you or a loved one on the journey to getting well.

How We're Working to Find Cures

The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research in the United States, spending approximately $130 million each year to work to find cures. We fund both external research projects through grants and scholarships as well as conduct our own research into cancer epidemiology, surveillance, and health policy. We fund beginning researchers with cutting-edge ideas early in their careers -- 44 of whom have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the highest accolade in scientific achievement.

How We Fight Back

We work with lawmakers to pass national and state laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join our fight.
